Earlier today I was sending emails back and forth with Donna Wetterstrand,  a Lethbridge business associate who I regularly work with. The topic of those emails was search engine optimization.

A new company (or probably one of the many who have been calling every Canadian business for the past two years but with a new name) has been soliciting Lethbridge businesses offering SEO services. Donna forwarded me a copy of their pitch to see what I thought. First I’ll post my comments to Donna and then explain why I said what I did.

The Email:

I read the proposal. It’s actually very weak.

Tell [name removed] that I’ll beat their claim – but to be honest it means I really only do about 5 hours of work; that’s [x-company's name removed] offer.

I probably would end up doing more than what they list because what they list is only a fraction of what I do.

So the bottom line is:

(1) Pick this service company; they will do nothing for her.
(2) Pay me to do the same (yes, pay me $999 to do nothing)
(3) Get serious with marketing and have me do a real Internet marketing job for her for $150/month (that’s the lowest I can go. I charge up to $1000/month for this service).

The Toronto Limo google-search example they showed is a joke. There are 260 searches a month for “limo service in toronto” while “toronto limo” gets searched 3600 times a month. Think about it, who would search “limo service in toronto” when they could just type “Toronto limo”?

She’s already dancing with a scam company. Tell her not to go home with them, she’ll get burned.

Why I said what I did:

When buying SEO services it is very important that you know what the best search terms are. If, for example, you are a Lethbridge law firm some of the top searches are:

• Lethbridge Lawyers
• Lethbridge Divorce Lawyers
• Lethbridge Real Estate Lawyer
• Lethbridge Law Firms

Whether or not the word is plural or singular really makes a difference. So  do other words such as “in”. For example, I could tell a business owner that I could rank them number one on Google for the search term The Best Divorce Lawyer in Lethbridge Alberta but that would be deceptive! Next to no one would actually type it in to Google.

Remember: It is more important to know that you are trying to rank for terms that actually get searched than having some one tell you what terms they can rank you for. There was a buzz word last year (it still may be around) it’s called Long Tail Searches. Long tail searches are things like The Best Divorce Lawyer in Lethbridge Alberta but long tails are useless is small cities and towns. They are useless because every term in Lethbridge is up for grabs; yes, your business should be able to be number one for just about every relevant search. Do be satisfied with being number one on obscure searches. Collect the maximum amount of relevant traffic and send it to a good landing page that has a strong message.
